I thought Robbins Timber's Marine Division was a good place to buy West System epoxy. It seems I was entirely wrong. Posters on A.N.Other site gave everyone the nod on another place to go here (http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/), at least for epoxy resins.

As you all know, I am getting close to the point where I will need rather a large quantity of West System materials and CFS sells the large 30 kg 'C' Pack for almost a hundred quid less than Robbins. With the VAT falling next week to 15%, this advice was more than just a little timely.:writing:

Rupert Dove-Meadows of Dove-Meadows Marine Coatings (Newton Abbott, South Devon) does a very good 2:1 ratio epoxy at a reasonable price. Have a look at the web site.

[George, I tried to find their website to link it here and found one that seems an uncompleted build with the word 'Meadows' spelled without the 'a', thus 'Medows'. No products on display, just headings. Not sure if that was the right place. Do you happen to have a link to their epoxy page by any chance?]

Hi Audrey

Not sure if you are referring to CFS or to George's recommended supplier. I was chatting to Robbins Timber the other day (I get good marine ply from them) and mentioned CFS's West System prices to them. They immediately said they would be prepared to negotiate with me on a bulk order to around the same price as CFS are offering. If you don't ask then you don't get, of course.

Perhaps it would be a good idea, when and if this site becomes better populated with some more of us serious backyardies, to arrange a discount for our members. I'll bear it in mind because I think it is do-able.

Has anyone used these guys, http://www.epoxy-resins.co.uk/? They seem to be offering quite decent starter packs with some boat plans. Anyone built any of these boats?

Yes, Paul, they do SEEM to be doing precisely that. I have had one or two conversations/communications with this chap (the owner). I asked some perfectly reasonable questions about comparisons with other products and he got all hot and bothered. So, I haven't used 'em and would NOT use 'em. Incidentally, I have seen no evidence that any more than just one person is 'these guys' up in Lancashire.

I am always wary of anyone who implies you will get something for nothing. Ask yourself why it is necessary to give something away in order to entice you to buy something else. My own experience has always been that absolutely nothing worth having in this world is truly 'free'. Even when it seems that way, there is a price to be paid sometime. The only exception to that is membership of this group, where you don't even have to suffer advertising. 'Nuf said! ;)

One more valid point, if I may. This outfit's website provides a contact address, addended with the following words: "( Office Only Sorry No Visitors)". I wonder what sort of 'office' it is that necessitates a total ban on visits from its customers, potential or otherwise? Perhaps it is one at which visitors demanding a refund for goods 'not fit for purpose' are most unwelcome?

Finally, I recommend you check the address using Google Maps. Looks like a row of terraced houses in a residential area to me. Could be wrong though. Anyway, 'caveat emptor'. It's up to you at the end of the day.

Best wishes
