The following PDF files have been downloaded as an extract of relevant chapters from a publication produced by The Forest Products Laboratory of the US Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service. It is referenced as 'The Wood Handbook' (http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/fplgtr/fplgtr113/fplgtr113.htm) and contains some very interesting and authoritative data with regard to the properties and uses of many kinds of wood.
We felt its content may be extremely useful for those who are unfamiliar with the properties and characteristics of various species of timber. At the same time, it is surely a valuable resource for those wishing to experiment with various boat building timbers.
Simply click on the chapter links you are interested in to go to a pdf file that you can download directly from here.

Chapter 4 Mechanical Properties of Wood - David W. Green, Jerrold E. Winandy, & David E. Kretschmann
Chapter 5 Commercial Lumber - Kent A. McDonald & David E. Kretschmann
Chapter 6 Lumber Stress Grades & Design Properties - David E. Kretschmann & David W. Green
Chapter 7 Fastenings - Lawrence A. Soltis
Chapter 8 Structural Analysis Equations - Lawrence A. Soltis
Chapter 9 Adhesive Bonding of Wood Materials - Charles B. Vick
Chapter 10 Wood-based Composites & Panel Products - John A. Youngquist
Chapter 11 Glued Structural Members - Russell C. Moody, Roland Hernandez, & Jen Y. Liu
Chapter 12 Drying & Control of Moisture Content & Dimensional Changes - William T. Simpson
Chapter 13 Biodeterioration of Wood - Terry L. Highley
Chapter 14 Wood Preservation - Rebecca E. Ibach
Chapter 15 Finishing of Wood - R. Sam Williams
There are a few more chapters but we suggest you take a look at the site (linked at the beginning of this post) and choose what you wish from them. It is a publicly downloadable resource. Not all chapters are of direct relevance to this website.
Enjoy! This is very good reading for a rainy day.
