I came across a couple of interesting videos on YouTube the other day and thought some of you might learn something from them.

The first is from Alec Jordan with his tips on scarphing (or scarfing, depending on where you hail from):

YouTube- How to build a wooden boat.

The second is on fairing those lumpy little edges you get on glass tape after you've finished epoxying them in place.

YouTube- Boat Building

I hope you will find them interesting and helpful, as did I.

If you grind a little "back" on the chisel it will be less prone to digging in whilst in use. "Back" is a very shallow angle on the reverse side of the chisel from the normal cutting angle.

Ahah, that sounds like a very useful tip. I know you need a polished back on plane blades but I thought it was sacrilege to grind anything off the back of a chisel.

My dad always said to just keep chisel backs dead flat or they would not cut as designed to. Of course, he was referring to using a chisel for chiselling, not for taking off edges on glass tape.

I think I will give your idea a try on one of my lesser chisels and see how it goes. Knowing you, it will work out perfectly.

Thanks, George. :approval:
