For those of you interested in high quality tools - or just a great day out with people who do things you do - here is news on a unique opportunity to go along and talk tools, free of charge.

Tom Lie-Nielsen and Deneb Puchalski of Lie-Nielsen Toolworks in the USA are coming over to the UK and, together with Axminster Tools (most of us buy gear from them at some time), are having an open show to "Talk Tools".

The venue and all other details are available here (http://www.axminster.co.uk/article-Talking-Tools-at-Rycotewood-Furniture-Centre-talkingtools.htm). The show is on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 February 2010 at Rycotewood Furniture Centre, Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, Oxpens Road, Oxford.

I'm going to try to get along to this one myself. As you all know, I have a number of Lie-Nielsen planes and it would be good to be able to meet the folk who make 'em and to pick their brains. :approval:

Best wishes

I remember the Lie-Nielsen display in Axminster tools, all gold and glistening. They seemed to wink at you as you tried to walk past! Would love to have a few of them in the tool cabinet.

I agree they look good - but they also work better than any other plane I've handled bar none. They are, as you probably know, based upon the Stanley planes of yesteryear.

They are possibly an indulgence, in that you can get the job done without spending anywhere near what Lie-Nielsens cost. However, it needs to be said that chippies and cabinetmakers of yore, including my dear departed dad, paid more in real terms for their Stanley planes than we pay today to buy the equivalent Lie-Nielsen.

It is not long since I bought the four modest Lie-Nielsens I own and they now cost considerably more retail than I paid. It can therefore be argued they are a pretty good investment. Certainly, they cannot be bought cheaply when sold secondhand.

I recommend that anyone looking for perfection should consider Lie-Nielsen products. They are guaranteed for life and are built to last a lifetime and more.

Sounds like I'm selling something here but I assure you I have absolutely no pecuniary interest whatsoever. Just love 'em.
