Here are a couple more useful 'How To' clips for those struggling with tools that blunt when they are not sure how to sharpen 'em up.

To be honest, I don't at present use an expensive handsaw. I use cheap, throw-away jobs that cost me less than a fiver each for the odd bit of sawing or a bandsaw for the heavier work where I am looking for speed. So, the following clip is really for those who own a really good handsaw and want to sharpen it. My father used to sharpen all his own saws using this method and I know it works. In fact, if you pay to have your saws sharpened professionally, this is all they do to take your money. Note the file is only doing half the job. You should really re-set the teeth as well. Go to Axminster Tools or Rutlands for the kit to do this work. Here's the clip on how to sharpen your handsaw.

And onward now to sharpening up your chisels. The difference between sharpening chisels and plane blades is that chisel backs MUST remain true, so all you do is remove any burring from the back of a chisel. With a plane blade, you need to put a polished edge on the very tip of the back face.

Here's the clip demonstrating how to sharpen up all those chisels.

Happy sharpening, everyone. ;)
