Every step I take nowadays is committing me to a firm path on where I'm going with that Whaler.

I picked up Hurth HBW-5 -used- transmission (3:1) to go with my Honda 20hp GX620. Only afterward I had checked that the engine did turn in the right direction.

Decided a marine tranny was what I needed, since it has everything built in to it (thrust block).
Now a prop, a prop shaft, weight calculations, engine box design, CLR calculation, mast and sail design (CE). Cabin design..... and it looks like I need Bulwarks!

Hi Clip

Well done! Interesting list - but am wondering about the need for bulwarks.

What makes you lean in that direction? And how do you propose to ensure they don't tear out the hull sides in heavy weather? Unless I am sorely misguided, retro fitting bulwarks can be a risky business. Would you not do better to rig a few S/S or galvanised posts and cable?

Best wishes

It wouldn't be retro fit as 80% of the bulwark would be on the section of hull added from the widening. Stanchions would be part of this.

You do bring a very big worry, in that I have to provide enough strength and support to the deck/hull area. At present I am looking very seriously at reinforcing the deck/hull joint with G10 material from underneath. The problem is, once the deck is on, anything underneath will not be accessible, as this is filled with bouyancy foam and will be sealed. Bolts are a problem.

The bulwarks will have to have a 2 inch gap to allow good draining off the deck. I think strength can be achieved by creating an I beam type cross-sectional shape, with a curve matching the deck edge. As long as the bow and aft end of the bulwark is firmly attached and supported, the stanchions holding it up would not have to take much lateral loading.
See quick drawing to show why they are needed. The cabin is too high due to shallow shape of the hull. If I lower it, I'll be crunched over while sitting.
